Mariposa High School Papercrete Project       "Cooperation not competition"

Photos of Mariposa High School Papercrete Project:

On March 22, 2008, a partnership with The Chrysalis Institute, Mariposa County Unified School District, Yosemite National Park, Cathys Valley Land and Legacy along with students and community citizens converged on the Mariposa High School Track field for a experimental project - a 130 ft x 3 1/2 ft triple-jump runway made out of papercrete - recycled paper, sand and portland cement. The mix was 50% paper, 30 % sand and 20% portland cement along with a box of Borax (to retard molding). The runway required 5 cubic yards of papercrete. Allen Smith of Motherload Building Material and Concrete agreed to mix the papercrete in his commercial concrete mixer and delivered the mix to the high school. Barbara Milazzo, MCUSD Service Learning Coordinator and Doug Johnson, Mariposa High School Track Coach proposed the idea of using papercrete to The Chrysalis Institute after learning of papercrete from The Chrysalis Institutes papercrete workshops. A coordinated effort was made between the two groups and engaged Yosemite National Park along with Cathys Valley Land and Legacy and Motherload Building Materials. History was made on this day.
